Teaching ======== The modules described below are currently offered in the master courses at the `ITT `_ Statistics ~~~~~~~~~~ The statistics course covers the basic principles of probability and statistics. We use Python scripts to retrieve, analyze, and visualize data. After completion of this module the participants will be able to: 1. Use tables and graphics to analyze and visualize frequency distributions 2. Understand key concepts of probability as well as descriptive and inferential statistics 3. Make generalizations from samples 4. Conduct hypothesis tests 5. Apply regression models 6. Understand the principles of geostatistics :ref:`More about statistics `. GIS and Remote Sensing ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The course geographic information systems and remote sensing cover aspects related to spatial analysis. After completion of this module the participants will be able to: 1. understand key properties of spatial data 2. obtain spatial data 3. create spatial data using GIS software 4. analyze spatial data using GIS and RS software 5. create thematic maps :ref:`More about GIS `. :ref:`More about Remote Sensing `. Hydrology ~~~~~~~~~ After completion of this module the participants will be able to: 1. Understand and quantify key hydrological processes; 2. Design hydro-meteorological networks; 3. Statistically analyze hydrological time-series 4. Calculate water availability using simple hydrological, hydraulic and groundwater models; 5. Understand sediment transport processes This module requires basic knowledge in GIS and statistics. Material for self-learning will be provided. Water Resources System Analysis ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ After completion of this module the participants will be able to: 1. use and develop geoprocessing tools for water resources system analysis; 2. use statistical tools for water resources system analysis 3. analyze hydrological time-series 4. apply flow and transport models for subsurface and surface hydrology; Flood Management ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ After completion of this module the participants will be able to: 1. understand flood management systems; 2. design flood early warning systems 3. design flood forecasting systems 4. analyze communication processes for flood warning dissemination 5. understand flood risk analysis processes 6. describe important flood mitigation and adaptation strategies Project II ~~~~~~~~~~ Students shall develop solution concepts for a defined problem in a given case study region in the field of natural resources management by: 1. Establishing projects objectives 2. Elaborate and analyze alternatives 3. Define criteria to apply decision making methods to select most appropriate solution concept 4. Implement project management approaches to organize group work Project III ~~~~~~~~~~~ Students shall develop implementation strategies for a given problem solution within a case study in the field of natural resources management by: 1. Establishing projects objectives 2. Elaborate implementation strategies 3. Define criteria to apply decision making methods to select most appropriate implementation tools Master thesis topics ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In preparation
